Looking Back: Clowning about and a penny for the guy

Here’s a wonderful picture taken by Chris Porsz of a very wet Bridge Street.

I wonder how much the man dressed as a clown and advertising a Christmas bazaar at the town hall got paid? However much it was, it wasn’t enough!

Does anybody recognise the family walking past him?

No doubt many older Peterborians can name some of the shops in view although most are long gone.

Chris’s other pictures this week are topical as they feature youngsters out just before Bonfire Night with their guys in the 1980s.

Even without lockdown you would be hard pressed to find children using guys to raise cash for fireworks these days.

The youngsters outside the TSB bank in Millfield look like they are after more than a penny from the cashpoint! Chris recently traced them – Ricky Clarke and Phil Cafaro – and took another picture of them for his next book Reunions the sequel.

Can anyone spot the location of the last picture? The Coop shop might be a clue.

It’s at the corner of Alma Road and Lincoln Road.
