Peterborough cancer ward's boost in memory of former Eye patient

Debbie Wesley’s family, friends and work colleagues collected £2,140 in her memory which will be put towards providing home comforts for patients being cared for on the ward in the future. The family presented their cheque to ward manager Mandy Gray earlier this month.

Debbie’s sister, Sally Hefferon, said: “Rather than spend money on flowers for her funeral, the family felt that we wanted to give something back to the ward where she received such great care.

“Debs was only diagnosed with cancer in September, so her death was such a shock to us all. In those short months we all spent a lot of time on the ward with her and were cheered by how amazing and caring the staff were, both to Debs and to us.

“Debs had two children and four grandchildren, who all spent time with her. We all really valued the way staff made us feel so ‘at home’ on the ward.

“As a thank you to the ward team, we wanted to raise money that can be used to buy something that will benefit patients in the same situation as Debs.”

Ward Manager Mandy Gray said: “We are so grateful to Debs’ family for raising funds for our patients. It is so important for us to be able to provide comfortable surroundings and this donation helps us go a long way to do this. It was a pleasure to care for Debs and her family.”
