New technology to help Peterborough heart patients

The AliveCor Kardia Mobile device is posted to patients experiencing symptoms of a possible heart condition to help clinicians make a diagnosis.

Patients simply open the app and place their fingers on the ECG monitor at the moment they experience symptoms of palpitations (a sensation of skipping a beat or extra beats). Their heart trace is recorded and the data is then sent to the consultant for review.

Michael Purdon, Head of Cardiac Investigations, for North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Kardia Mobile is helping us detect conditions such as cardiomyopathy, heart disease and arrhythmias. It has been particularly useful in identifying intermittent arrhythmias which can be difficult to capture.

“We are thrilled to be offering patients the opportunity. Previously, patients would come into hospital to have their ECG device fitted. Now we can keep our most vulnerable patients safe during the pandemic by ensuring they don’t have to leave the comfort of their home.”
