The Peterborough and Stamford NHS Foundation Trust has been awarded a new contract to work in partnership with Leicester’s Hospitals and Renal Services Limited to expand the outpatient haemodialysis capacity available in Peterborough.

The expansion at Westwood Farm will create eight additional dialysis stations, providing space for up to an additional 60 patients.

Frieder Kleemann, consultant nephrologist at the trust, said: “We are delighted that the expansion is taking place, enabling us to locally offer regular dialysis to all patients from the Peterborough area. This will transform their care experience, as at present a significant number of them have to travel to neighbouring dialysis units three times a week.

“We look forward to keeping our patients and the public updated as we move forward with the expansion project and anticipate welcoming the first patients to the new unit in early 2017.”

Dialysis is a procedure to remove waste products and excess fluid from the blood when the kidneys stop working properly. It often involves diverting blood to a machine to be cleaned.
