The medical centre will take over services currently run in Dogsthorpe, Welland, Parnwell, as well as Burghley Road Surgery and Church Walk Surgery, close to Lincoln Road.

Patients will have access to six consulting rooms, three minor operation/treatment rooms, a health care assistant/treatment room and a pharmacy.

The healthcare centre will be situated at the John Mansfield Centre in Western Avenue, Dogsthorpe, where the now demolished John Mansfield School used to be based.

Approval for the centre was unanimously given by members of the Peterborough City Council planning committee.

Councillor Peter Hiller, a committee member, said he knew the site well and that it had been “laying fallow.”

He added: “A medical centre of this calibre is welcome. As far as I’m concerned I would be completely supportive of this scheme.”

The positive decision came after residents at neighbouring Acacia Avenue removed their objections to the plans.

A petition of 44 signatures had been signed by the residents due to the influx of traffic which would come from people bypassing the traffic calming measures in Welland Road.

However, opposition to the development disappeared after it was agreed to close off the route from Acacia Avenue to the site.

The medical centre will also include 31 parking spaces for patients and Cllr Bella Saltmarsh, member for Dogsthorpe, said: “This site has been left derelict for too long.”

NHS England said it needs to agree the final business case from the Welland Medical Practice before it can progress with the development.

It will then set a completion date.
