In a powerful new video developed by communities working with Peterborough City and Cambridgeshire County Councils – a range of local residents from south Asian communities highlight how COVID has affected them, and ask everyone to play their part and follow the latest guidelines to stop Covid in its tracks so that we can return after lockdown to a life with fewer restrictions that affect our jobs, shopping, seeing loved ones and visiting places of worship.

This is the latest in a series of videos created by local communities and the Councils working in partnership. It is part of on-going work to ensure as many people as possible have access to Covid advice in their first language.

The video features members of the local south Asian community who are recovering from the virus or who have had a positive test result and who highlight the importance of reducing our social contact, wearing face coverings where required, keeping our distance, washing our hands regularly and getting tested if we display symptoms.

Abdul Choudhuri, Chairman of the Joint Mosques Council, said: “I urge everyone to watch the video. This is a real glimpse at the lives of a number of people within my community who have been directly affected by Covid – some who have taken months to recover from the illness. COVID is not a myth – I cannot stress that enough. If we all work together and follow the advice we are given we really can stop Covid in its tracks.”

Dr Liz Robin, Director for Public Health for Cambridgeshire County Council and Peterborough City Council said “I’d like to thank Peterborough communities, who have done so much already to keep local residents safe and reduce the spread of Covid-19 in our area. New national lockdown restrictions are now in place in response to rising Covid cases, and all communities need to help by reducing social contacts between different households. This video is a great example of how communities can support local authorities and the NHS in this work.

“We all know how difficult this is – but we really need people to reduce to the absolute minimum the people they have contact with now, to keep everyone safe and help us all get back to doing the things we love sooner.”
