The city’s rolling seven-day rate of new cases of Covid-19 per 100,000 of population published today (July 29) is 19.4 compared to 19.9 the previous week, with the city at 20th place in the national rankings.

Yesterday’s figure was also 19.4 compared to 22.4 the previous week and Monday’s figure was 18.4 compared to 24.4 the previous week.

Earlier today Dr Liz Robin, director of public health for Cambridgeshire County Council and Peterborough City Council, said: “Although the number of cases in the city has stabilised, our rate of new cases of Covid-19 is still more than three times the East of England average. It is essential that as a community we continue to work together to control the spread further.

“In order to limit the rate of infection residents must keep caring for themselves and others by continuing to social distance, abiding by new rules regarding face coverings in shops as well as public transport, plus washing hands thoroughly and regularly.

“It remains crucial that people go and get tested if they begin to show symptoms, and stay at home with their household if they test positive.”

The figures, for the seven days to July 26, are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two). The rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.

Oldham has drawn level with Leicester, with both areas recording broadly the same rate.

In Leicester, the seven-day rate has fallen from 73.2 to 56.3, with 200 new cases.
