Coronavirus: Peterborough’s rate of new cases has decreased but remains a concern

Latest figures show Peterborough’s rate of new coronavirus cases has dropped but is still at a level that the city’s public health chief had described as concerning.

Today’s update of the rolling seven-day rate of new cases of Covid-19 shows that many areas have now overtaken the city and Peterborough ranks as the 19th highest in the country - it had been in the top ten all last week.

The figures show Peterborough currently has a new case rate of 20.9 per 100,000 but this is down from a level as high as 35.8.

The figures, for the seven days to July 18, are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).

The rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 population.

Last week, when new case rates were at a similar level, Peterborough’s Director of Public Health Dr Liz Robin said: “The figures show we have a high rate of cases compared to the national average.

“These are community cases - it is not about people turning up to hospital, these are people who have turned up at the testing centres, or who have ordered tests online.

“They are tending to be people of a working age.

“This is a concern, and all our residents need to be aware about this. COVID 19 has not gone away anywhere in Peterborough and we all need to work together in the community to bring it under control.

“Residents need to continue to socially distance - two metres or one metre with mitigation, people need to continue to wash their hands.

“The new rules for face coverings in shops and on public transport are to be welcomed.

“It is also vital that people go and get a test if they are showing symptoms, and stay at home, with your household, if you test positive. The only reason to go out if you have symptoms is to get a test.”

Data for the most recent three days (July 19-21) has been excluded as it is incomplete and likely to be revised.

In Blackburn with Darwen, the rate has jumped from 47.7 in the seven days to July 11 to 78.6 in the seven days to July 18, with 117 new cases recorded.

Second on the list is Leicester, where the rate has gone down from 125.6 to 73.8, and where 262 new cases have been recorded.

Other areas reporting notable week-on-week jumps include:

- Oadby and Wigston (up from 38.6 to 68.4, with 39 new cases recorded in the seven days to July 18)

- Rochdale (up from 40.5 to 46.8, with 103 new cases)

- Hyndburn (up from 4.9 to 32.2, with 26 new cases)

- Sandwell (up from 8.6 to 22.3, with 73 new cases)
