The Peterborough Telegraph contacted NHS England, which commissions dental services, after being asked for advice by a reader whose daughter needs urgent treatment.

In response, Rachel Webb, director of primary care and public health for NHS England and NHS Improvement in the East of England, said: “NHS England and NHS Improvement is committed to ensuring everyone can continue to access high quality urgent dental care, and we are regularly monitoring and reviewing access to dental services in the area in line with national guidance.

“Anyone who needs urgent or emergency dental care should call their regular practice in the first instance.

“For those who cannot contact their dentist or do not have one, and require urgent care, patients are advised to use the NHS 111 online service available here: https://111.nhs.uk/.”

Because of the coronavirus all routine dental treatment has been stopped at the moment but a regional triaging service has been established which directs urgent cases to one of a small number of designated centres for treatment. One of the centres is in Peterborough.
