School in search of new artist

The primary school is looking for a new artist in residence, following the departure of Ellie Sandall, a published author and illustrator who has been teaching art to the pupils for the past seven years.

A children’s book author and illustrator working predominantly in watercolour, pastel and collage, Ellie has passed on her passion for art to the pupils at St John’s, having taught them a range of techniques in the school’s custom-built art studio.

Headteacher Colette Firth said: “We have been very lucky to have an artist in residence - but Ellie is now off to pursue her career in illustration and we wish her the very best.”

The school is looking for someone who can replace Ellie in her role as the artist in residence. Anyone with a love for art and teaching, is welcome to apply for the role.

The pupils are particularly keen to get a new art teacher as soon as possible, so that they can continue exploring their passion for art.

Kaysie, aged nine, said: “I really miss having art lessons in the studio with Miss Sandall as she inspired me and I loved looking at the artwork made by people in other classes.”

Alicja, aged eight, described what she wants from the new artist in residence: “I’d like our new art teacher to be kind and helpful, to show me how to become an artist myself,” she said.
