Pupils at Ormiston Meadows Academy in Peterborough, part of Ormiston Academies Trust, have achieved the school’s best ever results in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Phonics.

Data released this week shows the academy has seen an exceptional improvement in both indicators in the last year, with improvement rates well above the national average.

In the EYFS 75 per cent of pupils showed a good level of development in comparison to 60% last year, this is likely to place them above the national average which in 2015 stood at 66 per cent.

Phonics also saw a dramatic improvement with 83 per cent of pupils passing the phonics screening test in comparison to 68% last year, again likely to put Meadows well above the national average which in 2015 was 77 per cent. Phonics is a way of teaching children to read quickly and skilfully and is the first important step in learning to read.

Jean Watt, Principal at Ormiston Meadows Academy, said: “We strongly believe that early years education is a key part of a child’s educational journey and with the right support every child can go on to succeed at school with confidence. We are committed to working closely with parents and children to ensure they are confident and independent learners who thrive on challenge.”

“I am so proud of all the teachers, staff and children who have worked so hard to achieve such exceptional results and we look forward to building on this progress in the future.”
