Oakdale Primary School in Oakdale Avenue, Stanground, has been having extensive works carried out over the summer with a new school office and staff area being put in and refurbishments to the hall and foyer.

However, the works will not finish until after the new academic year starts on Thursday, meaning a delay for pupils beginning the term.

A letter sent out to parents from headteacher Ilona Wrigley states: “Unfortunately the contractors, Jeakins Weir, have been unable to complete these works in time for the start of term on 6th September and instead these will not be complete until the 17th September.

“As these areas are essential for the school to function I regret to inform you that we are unable to open the school to pupils on the 6th September. To try to minimise the disruption this will cause to parents and pupils, we have been working hard with the Local Authority and the contractors to put temporary plans into place which will enable us to open for pupils as soon as possible.

“These include the creation of a temporary school office in the Key Stage One Library.

“Despite our best efforts, I am sorry to inform you that we have to defer the start of term until Monday 10th September.

“I am very aware of the inconvenience this will cause to parents and wish to wholeheartedly apologise for this unfortunate situation which has been beyond our control.”

Alistair Weir, managing director for Jeakins Weir, said: “Over the summer we have carried out extensive works to the existing school. The works are now well on their way to completion but, unfortunately, due to unforeseen works some areas have over run.

“We are committed to ensuring that the children and staff will be enjoying their new surroundings as soon as possible and apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

Parents with any questions are asked to call Peterborough City Council on 01733 747474 as the school’s broadband and phones are currently not working.
