A specialist Saturday music school, Peterborough Centre for Young Musicians will enhance progression routes in music education in the area by collaborating with Ormiston Bushfield Academy and receiving support from the Peterborough Music Hub. It will be open to young people throughout the area and will have a bursary scheme to promote access.

The weekly sessions, throughout the academic year, begin on October 8, with a free introductory Open Day on September 24 at Ormiston Bushfield Academy.

Kirsten Barr, Peterborough CYM centre manager, said: “We are very excited to be working in partnership with the Guildhall School and its Centre for Young Musicians on this project. The Peterborough Centre for Young Musicians will provide a great opportunity for young musicians to learn from professional music teachers and performers. It’s really important that they get to meet people who are doing it for real – it gives them those role models they need to keep them going.”

Peterborough CYM, open to applicants aged between 7-18, will offer focused professional training and an opportunity to bring the city’s talented young musicians together, producing the perfect environment for creative excellence. It will provide a foundation for higher education training options and professional music careers in the future. The young musicians will also have the opportunity to train locally in association with one of the world’s leading conservatoires with Guildhall School graduates and professors providing expert workshop opportunities and masterclasses throughout the year.

Stephen Dagg, director, CYM National Strategy, said: “I am delighted that the Young Artists’ division of the Guildhall School, in partnership with the Peterborough Music Hub, will be launching a new branch of CYM. Peterborough Centre for Young Musicians will join a vibrant national network of Saturday music centres bearing the CYM name.

“Along with young musicians in London, Taunton, Norfolk and Saffron Walden, students attending the Peterborough centre will enjoy an integrated curriculum of ensembles in a variety of styles and genres, choral training and general musicianship classes on Saturdays during school terms. Individual lessons will also be available.”
