The provisional results show that the number of pupils achieving grades A*-C in mathematics has increased by a staggering 14 percentage points to 70 per cent and that attainment in English has also continued to improve to 72 per cent. With 61 per cent of students achieving grades A*-C in both English and mathematics, this places the academy above the national average for 2015.

In previous years all schools’ and academies’ examination results were measured on how many pupils achieved five GCSEs at grades A*-C including English and mathematics. From this year all pupils, schools and academies are measured on how much progress their pupils make from their achievement at Key Stage 2 in Year 6 to when they complete their exams at the end of Year 11. This is known as Progress 8 and was designed to encourage all pupils to study a broad and balanced curriculum. The Progress 8 measure is based on pupils’ progress measured across eight subjects and is a comparison of their progress against the progress of all other students nationally. As the results of all pupils need to be analysed to calculate this measure this headline figure will not be available from the DfE until Late September.

However, early indications show that pupils at the Stanground Academy have made more than three levels of progress when their overall results are compared with the levels they achieved at Key Stage 2. In addition, the number of pupils making three and four levels of progress in English and mathematics are both above last year’s national averages.

James Scarrott, Principal, said: “Our 2016 GCSE are results are fantastic; a tremendous improvement on our already good 2015 results. More students than ever before are making excellent progress, achieving the high level grades they need to realise their ambitions.

“I am proud of their achievements which are a testament to their hard work and the opportunities they have taken advantage of at the Stanground Academy to ensure their success. My thanks go to our dedicated staff for their commitment and relentless focus and of course to the parents who have supported their children at this important time in their lives.

“Finally, I offer my congratulations to our students and I look forward to helping them build on their success in our high-performing sixth form.”
