Children as young as five at Highlees Primary in Westwood showed off the food they had collected at a special assembly last Friday.

The pupils were inspired after the School Council was contacted by KingsGate Community Church in Parnwell to support the foodbank.

School Council leader Angela Allen said: “The children saw how they were struggling to get supplies donated. There was not enough to keep up with demand for local families.

“When we got back to school the kids said they wanted to started a collection. We have five to six year olds who could not fathom poverty in the local area.”

The pupils will now collect stationery for the foodbank.
