The new discount supermarket, which has been named Jack's, will be the first of 60 to be opened nationwide over the next few months.

It comes as Tesco looks to combat the rise of successful German discount stores Aldi and Lidl and hang on to its position as grocery market leader with a share of 27.4 per cent.

The first cut-price Jack's store will be officially opened today by Tesco chief executive, Dave Lewis.

The new chain is named after Jack Cohen, who founded Tesco 99 years ago in 1919, earning the nickname “Slasher Jack” for his “pile-it-high, sell-it-cheap” approach to retailing.

The new store will be housed on a site which was initially earmarked for a new Tesco store with up to 250 jobs.
