REVEALED: The 125 Peterborough restaurants that still need to improve hygiene standards according to health inspectors

Last year the Peterborough Telegraph highlighted the best and worst food hygiene ratings in the city at that time.

A number of those premises have now improved, but, despite re-inspections many still fall below satisfactory levels according to the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

From chip shops to Indian restaurants, cafes to hotels, every business serving food must be inspected by council officials – with each given a rating out of five for food hygiene.

Data from the Food Standards Agency (FSA) has found 125 eateries in Peterborough failed to meet satisfactory food hygiene standards at the time of the last published inspection - an improvement on 141 a year ago.

A total of eight eateries gained zero stars meaning “urgent improvements needed”, 52 only gained one star, meaning “major improvements” were needed, and 66 got two stars, meaning “improvements necessary.”

The good news is most businesses preparing food in the area were ranked three or above.

Eateries are judged on three criteria:

•How hygienically the food is handled – how it is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored.

•The condition of the structure of the buildings – the cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and other facilities.

•How the business manages and records what it does to make sure food is safe.

The scheme is run by local authorities in England, Northern Ireland and Wales in partnership with the Food Standards Agency.
