The Post Office is proposing to move Peterborough City Crown Post Office branch from its current location in Cowgate and create a new branch within the nearby WHSmith’s store, extending opening hours for customers and offering a wide range of Post Office services seven days a week.

The move, if given the green light, would happen in September.

The Post Office will be inviting customers and interested parties to give their comments on the proposed move in a six-week public consultation that starts tomorrow (25 May 2016).

Roger Gale, General Manager of the Post Office Crown Network, said: “We are committed to keeping our services on the high street which we know is hugely important to people. This proposal means we can continue to do that, into the future.

Customers will be offered the same range of services (with the exception of the Digital Application Service for the Home Office) and more convenient, longer opening hours, including Sundays.

“WHSmith already operates around 100 Post Office branches from their stores in the UK and we’ve been successfully working with them for nearly ten years. They have a proven record of running Post Offices with consistently high levels of customer service.”

He added that the proposal for Peterborough Post Office branch would help secure long-term viability of services for local customers.

Post Office opening hours would be 9am–5.30pm Monday to Saturday and 10.30am to 2.30pm on Sunday. This means Post Office services would be available for a total of 55 hours every week, 9.5 hours more than are currently offered.

Existing staff at Peterborough’s current branch have the right to transfer their employment to WHSmith if they wish to do so, in line with TUPE legislation. All options will be discussed with them individually so they can make informed decisions about their future and are supported in those decisions.

The consultation opens tomorrow, and closes on July 6,
