Jobs created as Co-op opens new store in Peterborough

More than 20 jobs have been created in Peterborough with the opening of a new Co-operative food store.

Central England Co-operative officially opened the doors to its store in High Street, Eye, which has 21 staff.

The ceremony was performed by the Mayor of Peterborough, Councillor John Peach and Mayoress of Peterborough Janet Martin with help from children of Eye Primary School and Peterborough Foodbank.

Store manager Lee Whittaker said: “We’ve had a great launch day with lots of positive comments made by customers.

“As part of our celebrations, 50 lucky shoppers received a golden ticket, product giveaway.

“We provided in-store bakery tastings, talked to customers about membership and how we can support the local community with our Community Dividend Fund.

He added: “We are all looking forward to becoming a valued part of the local community and getting to know our customers and neighbours, so please come and visit the store and pick up some fabulous products this spring.”

The store’s fixtures and fittings include the latest in energy efficient refrigeration to minimise environmental impact and LED lighting.

The store also offers Paypoint, Collect Plus, Lottery, foreign currency, a free cash machine and a free car park.

Cllr Peach said: “We were honoured to support the opening of Central England Co-operatives new store in Eye.

“The food store has a good range of products, from original merchandise to something more unique, like beetroot and apple bread. It is a great addition to the local area and for the residents of Eye.”

Isobel Williams, one of the lucky customers who received a product giveaway said: “I had heard about a special opening event for the launch of the store, but I am never lucky with product giveaways and I certainly didn’t think I would be leaving the store with a 50” TV. I was really shocked, but very happy – thanks Co-op.”
