Changing face of Peterborough’s skyline

Groundwork has now started at the site of the new Hilton Hotel at Fletton Quays.

The first spade was put in the ground on the site in July, and workers have made a large amount of progress on the site since then.

Work had been delayed because of COVID-19, but the Hilton Garden Inn should be open in 2022.

Near-by, work has nearly finished on the new Premier Inn, which has been built on the site of the old Bridge Street Police Station.

Finishing touches are now being put in place before it opens.

In the south of the city, the old British Sugar Offices have now been demolished, and work to build a new supermarket in its place is well under way.

The new Lidl will create 40 jobs when it is completed.

The skeleton of the store has now been completed as the works continue.

Across town on Bourges Boulevard, workers are continuing to re-build the former Toys R Us building.

The site, which was ravaged by fire last year, will become a new Home Bargains and Iceland store.

Earlier this year it was hoped the stores could be open by next month, depending on the impact of the COVID pandemic.

The Northminster Car Park in the city centre has been completely demolished over the summer ahead of further development in the area.

And one of the biggest schemes in the city centre is also on track.

The construction work around Queensgate associated with the new Empire cinema.

As well as the cinema, the development involves the construction of a new offering of restaurants and retail stores in a 70,000 sq ft extension that will create about 200 jobs.

Completion is expected in late 2021.
