Alan Swann: Over-paid sportsmen out of their comfort zone
World of Sport - 22/07/08

THERE are few better sporting sights than seeing over-paid, pampered professional sportsmen taken out of their comfort zone.
That's why I love the wind to blow at The Open. The Yanks in particular have no idea how to combat a stiff breeze and drop of seaside rain – many of those who are not too scared to come over in the first place, go home running to their mom after a couple of days.
Which is why I was appalled that Britain's own Sandy Lyle walked off the course after 10 holes of the tournament, partly because his glasses had steamed up.
Lyle is a Scot so he should be used to the cold. I trust the authorities will act accordingly and ban the big softie from next year's event.
AB De Villiers was quite rightly castigated for his belief that the one hand one bounce catching rule now applies in Test cricket.
But for the England players and their fans to behave as though cheating was a rarity in the sport was an absolute nonsense.
What De Villiers did was no different to a batsman failing to walk off when he knows he's nicked one behind, or to a bowler, Monty Panesar for instance, leaping around like a cat on acid when he knows his appeal is baseless as far as the laws are concerned.
Mind you when you have people like Billy Bowden umpiring I'm not surprised players are keen to try it on.
When you are an attention-seeking drama queen like Bowden you really need to be spot on with all of your decisions – sadly this bloke isn't.
