MEMBERS of a Werrington martial arts gym were on the ropes after a visit from former Irish heavyweight boxing champion Joe Egan.
The boxer-turned-actor, nicknamed ‘the toughest white man on the planet’, spent two days filming at the Spiritual Warrior Martial Arts gym for a film to be released at cinemas nationally later this year.
The gym is the setting for Egan’s new film On The Ropes, a mockumentary described as Spinal Tap meets Rocky. It tells the story of Big Joe (Egan), the leader of a martial arts gym, and his troubles with a rival gym run by a karate expert.
Steven Scales, Spiritual Warrior’s owner, said: “It was fascinating to watch the film being made.
“I spent a lot of time with Joe which was fantastic. All the guys involved were really good fun and we enjoyed the whole thing. Gym members even got the chance to grace the silver screen as their classes were filmed.”
