AT 15 inches long and three inches wide, Brian Bowern believes this is the city's biggest carrot.
Mr Bowern, of Rutland Court, Peterborough, struggled to pull the gigantic vegtable out of the ground at the weekend and at first thought it was going to be a "little stumpy one".

He said: "I couldn't believe it when I pulled it out. It is definitely the biggest one I have ever seen or grown, so I quickly measured and weighed it. I have grown 10 inch carrots before, but not like this."

Mr Bowern took up an allotment in Burton Street with his wife, Crisanta (61) who comes from a keen farming family in Portugal.

And the 69-year-old who also grows turnips, parsnips, cabbages and garlic, believes the secret to growing gigantic carrots is from a packet of special seeds brought in Portugal. He said: "The packet said gigantica, but we didn't think they would get that big."
