ONE of the world's most respected and renowned environmentalists has visited Rutland Water.
Sir David Attenborough marked the official start of work on the £115 million Rutland Project at the centre, in Egleton, Oakham.

The major programme of engineering works is to enable Anglian Water to meet increased demand for water in future years by removing up to 60 million extra litres per day from Rutland Water.

The water treatment works and pipelines are being increased to cope with the extra removal.

And a unique part of the scheme is the creation of new wetland areas and lagoons near Egleton, which will have independent water levels to ensure that if the water level in the main body of the reservoir dips the wildlife, which is at the heart of Rutland Water, will not be disturbed.

I can't see him as the greedy publicity hungry celebrity asking for pots of cash can you? Plus Sir David spent a lot of time cycling around Rutland and Leicester in his younger days (http://tinyurl.com/4g2t9), so I would imagine he's more than happy to do his bit, being one of the most important and respected broadcasters in the history of TV.

If I had known sooner I would have gone there today.
Sir David Attenborough is a credit to our nation, and is a genuine role model in my eyes.

I bet his fee was more than my wages for a year when I worked on the building of Rutland and Graffam water.

David Attenborough is probaly one of the worst for telling poachers exactly where rare animals are.
His famous sitting with silver back apes resulted in all of them being killed. Poachers see his programs ask around the tribes if they recognise an area move in after him and start poaching.

Ok let's resolve this rather odd line of enquiry straight away... As organiser of this morning's event I can confirm that Sir David Attenborough did NOT ask for a fee for attending: He is genuinely impressed with the work Anglian Water is doing to ensure the wildlife is not disturbed by additional water abstraction from the reservoir (which people should rememeber is there primarily as a drinking water resource). He did ask for a small donation to be made to the Leicestershire & Rutland Wildlife Trust, which we were more than happy to do. Sir David is a charming and witty gentleman, as well as an inspirational environmentalist, and we were honoured that he attended this event to give his endorsement.

Thank you for clearing that up Dan, I can not believe some people's comments on here.
I can understand why some people are cynical in this day and age, but like I said before Sir David Attenborough is a true role model, he quietly goes about his work, without much fuss or media attention and really is as Dan says, inspirational.
