MODEST amateur golfer Brian Soanes claimed the rare feat of carding a hole in one on Thursday – despite claiming he had been playing "really badly recently".
Brian, who plays off a handicap of 15, created his own moment of history when he scored with his first shot on the par three 200-yard 8th hole at Greetham Valley Golf Course, near Oakham, in Rutland.

And later that night, the delighted chief executive of The Business Club (TBC) couldn't sleep because he was so excited about what he had achieved at the company's twice annual charity golf day.

But he wasn't the first man to achieve the remarkable exploit at one of TBC's charity golf days, as another golfer had done it seven years ago when they played at Elton Furze Golf Club.

He said: "I've been playing really badly recently, so it was doubly delicious.

"The hole is beautiful as it's across a valley and I hit the ball absolutely correct and it curved round towards the hole, but I see it go in as the sun was in my eyes. But it was there in the hole when we got down to the green.

"TBC's members came across the course and were congratulating me, which lifted an already good day. But the only downside was we had 97 people playing and I had to buy a round of drinks for all of them."

But that was just the start of it for Brian (63), as when he got home, his wife Francesca had put up a big congratulations banner at the back of their home in Tansor, near Oundle.

Perhaps, as Brian joked, as a way of trying to convince him to let her have his prize.

For producing the rarest sight in golf, Brian's walked away with a brand new car from Peterborough car dealer Marshalls, which were sponsoring the event for the first time.

The Business Club is a networking group for about 500 businesses.

Well done Brian Soanes for getting your Hole-in-One at Greetham Valley recently. A nice prize to win, a car. However, in accepting the prize you just forfeited your Amateur status as a golfer. The rules of golf tightly restrict the value of prizes that an Amateur may accept, and a car is certainly way above the limit. Your home club, if you have one, would be fully within their rights to ban you from entering any further club competitions, as would any club you visited. I know it seems unfair, but we all have to abide by the rules of the wondrful game.
Congratulations, newly Professional, Brian Soanes.

OK, so he's not strictly a PRO, but the rules would prevent him from entering amateur competitions.
