Yet more roadworks add to traffic delays

MOTORISTS in Peterborough are facing even more delays after another set of roadworks got under way on a major city route yesterday.
Improvements to the Boongate roundabout, at the junction of the A1139 Frank Perkins Parkway and Fletton Parkway, are taking place over the next four weeks.

But anxious to avoid a repeat of the rush-hour traffic chaos seen as engineering work commenced on the Nene Parkway last week, Peterborough City Council is limiting the scheme's working hours to off-peak times.

The council's cabinet member for the environment, Wayne Fitzgerald, said the decision to restrict work from 9.30am until 3.30pm was for the benefit of drivers.

He said: "No one likes roadworks, myself included, but they are a necessary fact of life.

"We are mindful of certain traffic problems around the city, and the work schedule is a positive measure to help the public have as easy a journey as possible."

Bid to improve access
Work on the city's Boongate roundabout will improve access from all directions.

Improvement work is being carried out at the key roundabout, which inter- sects Fletton Parkway and Frank Perkins Parkway.

Lane closures will be in place daily, from 9.30am until 3.30pm, with work scheduled to continue until Friday, October 17.

However, when work at Boongate began yesterday, there were some tailbacks on the Fletton Parkway approaching what is one of the busiest roundabout intersections in the city. The works are scheduled to run until Friday, October 17.

The scheme involves the widening of the approach roads Boongate West, Boongate East and Carr Road, as well as the installation of new signs.

For the duration of the work, there will be lane closures in operation, but council officials say at least a single lane will be maintained at all times.

The start of the scheme comes a week after repair work began on part of the Nene Parkway and a section of the A1 north of the city was reduced to a single lane, causing severe delays for commuters.

Drivers complained of long rush-hour tailbacks caused by the lane restrictions and 40mph speed limit on Nene Thorpe Bridge, which are due to remain in place for another three weeks.

Another minor irritation for city motorists will come when overnight re-surfacing works are carried out at the Queensgate roundabout, in Bourges Boulevard, between Monday and Thursday of next week.

Meanwhile, traffic misery continued on the A1 last night, with a contraflow system restricting both sides of the dual carriageway to a single lane while work takes place to improve the Carpenter's Lodge roundabout, near Stamford.

Further roadworks are being planned at the Thomas Cook roundabout, where the Nene Parkway joins the A47, for traffic lights to be installed at the end of October.

Can't they plan these roadworks not to happen at the same time??

Its bad enough that the traffic from the Nene parkway are using the fletton parkway but now additional delays!!! Ridiculous! Im getting fed up of Peterborough and all this congestion

As opposed to how many lanes??? Are we supposed to be grateful that they're not closing the road completely?

"We are mindful of certain traffic problems around the city, and the work schedule is a positive measure to help the public have as easy a journey as possible." - is that why all the roadworks come at once?
It's bad planning, and it's about time the council issued an appology to the city's motorists and admit they've got it dreadfully wrong.

With the number of cameras around, these guys must be aware of traffic flows and peak flow times. They must also be aware that drivers will seek alternative routes rather than sitting in queues. They must have access to a predictive traffic flow simulation program (if not why not) so why don't they run simulations and arrange and sequence roadworks for minimum impact rather than haphazard havoc

I use the A1139 every day to get to work and exit at Boongate. For over a year now I have been held up with the lane widening works near Hampton and now they have nearly finished they are going to hold me up again at Boongate. These works are supposed to ease congestion but the roads only became congested when the roadworks started. Further to this, the traffic flow is considerably decreased during the school holidays, the 6 week summer break has only just ended so why could they not have done this then? Do they do these things on purpose just rub salt in the wounds of us over-taxed and under fuelled motorists???

Never mind it will soon be Christmas and Oundle Rd will be dug up shortly and we'll have bus lanes over the bridge again!

It would make sense to finish one lot of roadworks before they start the next, oh sorry we are talking about PCC and they are not to familiar with the word sense.

I don't see why they cannot continue working on the Boongate area after 7.30pm until 5am the following day to help ease the lenght of time that these roadworks are going to be in place.

It does seem rather odd that there are so many roadworks straight after the school holidays - and still the council hasn't explained why they weren't carried out over the holiday period.
The silence just screams "we're afraid to admit we got it wrong."

It's all okay. This is all part of a new PCC green initiative. By creating a moat of roadworks and slowly cutting off every entrance to the city centre, PCC can claim to have met it's green targets of cutting city centre pollution by totally pedestrianising the roads within 2 miles of Cathedral Square.
How daft of us to think that they're a bunch of daft suits who couldn't organise a picnic in Sainsbury's.

I don't think I've ever seen someone WORKING on the roadworks outside of those hours anyway.
