COMMUTERS faced traffic chaos this morning as they were caught in four-mile tailbacks on the Nene Parkway during rush-hour.
Engineering works on Nene Thorpe Bridge began today and caused misery for motorists battling to get to work on time.

And the misery is expected to last for a further four weeks.

One driver branded the roadworks a nightmare as his journey into work ground to a halt in the gridlock.

Trevor Mills joined the A47 at Dogsthorpe Roundabout just after 8am and found traffic at a standstill all the way down to the Thorpe Road roundabout.

He said: "I have been stuck here for half an hour.

"I shall probably go through town tomorrow to get to Oundle Road.

"There are very few routes available from the north of the city to the south, so it looks like it's going to be like this for the next four weeks.

"It has been a nightmare this morning."

MOTORISTS have faced delays of up to an hour this morning as contraflows set up around the Carpenter's Lodge junction upgrade at Stamford brought traffic to a standstill at times.

Another motorist, Keith Sharp, had seen his 10-minute journey stretch to more than half an hour.

Mr Sharp said: "It took me 20 minutes to go two miles, and in front of me all I could see were cars backed up.

"The inside lane was at a complete standstill, and the outside lane was crawling.

"I had no idea when I was going to make it into work.

Peterborough City Council contractors are carrying out waterproofing and road resurfacing work in the latest stage of a £1.86 million scheme to strengthen the bridge.

For commuters, the traffic misery is set to continue as work is expected to last four weeks, and will include narrow lanes and a reduced speed limit.

Temporary speed cameras have also been put in place for the duration of the work on both sides of the A1260 – a mandatory requirement.

Repairs began earlier this year on the bridge, which spans the River Nene, Nene Valley Railway and a section of Nene Park, after safety inspections revealed that parts of the structure were corroded.

The resurfacing work coincides with an ongoing road widening operation on the A1139 Fletton Parkway.

Similar lane narrowing and speed restrictions are in place on Fletton Parkway, near the junction with the A1260.

Further works are being planned at the Thomas Cook roundabout, where the Nene Parkway joins the A47, for traffic lights to be installed at the end of next month.

Citizens of Peterborough, do not panic, contractors will work 24hours a day, 7-days a week to ensure that the disruption to your lives will be minimal.

However, please do not be upset if you drive past and see nothing happening. So as not to upset the beautiful surroundings of this blooming city, our contractors are wearing invisibility cloaks.

We apologize for any delay.

Whatever you do mind your carbon footprint. You will inevitably destroy planet earth. If you can organise a couple of months off work, that would be champion.

Keith Sharp should either walk or bike to work if his journey is only two miles.

Bodie - you're right, Keith Sharp COULD walk or bike to work. However, as we live in a free society, he has the right to choose not to, a freedom of choice we all have.

This morning was a disgrace. Through trafffic on the westbound A47 very much caught up in the horrendous jam. There should not be one lane in operation during peak rush hours. Or if so, there should be contractors working at that time too. C'mon City Council - sort it out.

And his journey is not two miles. Read his quote again.

Well my 8 minute drive from Longthorpe to Orton Wistow took 37 minutes around a parkway system that was gridlocked.

A number of things I can't fathom :-

1. Doesn't anybody at Town Hall co-ordinate road works such that we don't have more than one major route impacted on at any one time ?

2. Why is it that these major tasks are not being completed 24/7 in order to minimize disruption ?

3. Why do the workforce, especially on the Nene Parkway Bridge, only seem to work about four hours a day ? I pass that bridge at 8:15am and 3:30pm every day and my kids amuse themselves by trying to "spot the workman". The only people you see are invariably sitting in lorry cabs or at the side of the road, eating, laughing and generally messing around !

4. What the hell are they actually doing with the Nene Parkway Bridge ? Its been going on for months and yet there is no obvious sign of amy improvements to anything. Equally, why have they now cordoned off the central reservation ? What has that got to do with "bridge maintenance" ?!!!

The original article on 4th September talked about narrow lanes, nothing about lane closures. Are the lanes closed for the duration of the 4 weeks??

Ironically it is 'Travelchoice week' this week.
Next Monday is 'car free day' at the council. Hmmmm.

Calm down folks - I cycle to work and ride underneath the Nene Parkway where I can confirm that there has been major work taking place underneath the bridge. I'm not sure what they're doing, because there has been several major works there over the past few months. This time looks the most serious, with each leg of the bridge covered in scaffolding and heavy machinery in action at 8:45 in the morning.

However, today there didn't appear to be much work going on underneath so I can only assume they are waiting for some equipment or specialised service to arrive.

If you want to get all annoyed about this, then it should be about why the bridge needs so many attempts at repairing it.
