COUNCIL cabinet member Wayne Fitzgerald has hit back at claims that "poor organisation" of Peterborough's roadworks programme is causing chaos for city motorists.
Cllr Fitzgerald, Peterborough City Council's cabinet member in charge of roads, admits ongoing works on Nene Parkway and Boongate roundabout are an inconvenience for drivers, but says the situation is far from "catastrophic".

The Conservative councillor's comments are a response to criticism from the authority's second biggest political group, the Peterborough Independent Forum.

Spokesman Keith Sharp told The Evening Telegraph the start of junction improvement work at Boongate this week had been badly timed, with traffic continuing to be affected by repairs to Nene Thorpe Bridge on the A1260.

Cllr Sharp said: "The city's major arteries are blocked up and it's causing chaos.

"As far as I'm concerned it's down to poor organisation. These things shouldn't all have to be done at the same time and the council needs to act to ease the concerns of Peterborough's motorists."

Work began on Monday to revamp the Boongate roundabout, at the junction of the A1139 Frank Perkins Parkway and Fletton Parkway, although the four-week operation is being timed to avoid the morning and evening rush hours.

The Nene Thorpe Bridge repairs are causing problems for commuters, with a section of each carriageway reduced to a single lane until October 10.

Both operations coincide with continuing work on the A1 Carpenter's Lodge roundabout, near Stamford, although this is being carried out by the Highways Agency and is outside the city council's area.

Cllr Fitzgerald said: "There is no reason why certain roadworks can't happen at the same time, provided they don't cause complete mayhem.

"I know the Nene Parkway work is causing a few problems but it is essential work.

"I also realise people don't like the inconvenience and the situation is not being helped by the A1, which is totally out of our control, but it is not quite catastrophic.

"Our improvement works are carefully planned and consideration is given to the impact they will have on drivers across the city. We don't just do it without thinking."

Work is set to begin at the end of October on installing new signals at the Thomas Cook roundabout, linking the A1260 with the A47, but by that time the Nene Parkway and Boongate operations are set to be completed.

Cllr Fitzgerald revealed that he turned down a request to begin roadworks on a new housing development off London Road in Hampton, Peterborough, because of its impact on the city's traffic during the current works.

I can only assume that Councillor Fitzgerald hasn't tried to travel anywhere during peak times then, because the whole roadworks programme is worse than chaos.....it's a complete joke. And if I see any national ads in the meantime inviting people to 'Visit Pterborough' I'm going to contact the Advertising Standards on the basis that no one can actually get to Peterborough at the moment! Stick that one in your pipe and smoke it Councillor Fitzgerald.

"Cllr Fitzgerald revealed that he turned down a request to begin roadworks on a new housing development off London Road in Hampton, Peterborough, because of its impact on the city's traffic during the current works."

That's very astute of him seeing how building work has stopped due to the credit crunch. C'mon PCC and Mr Fitzgerald just admit you couldn't organise the preverbial up in a brewery.

Obviously a member of the David Silly Farquhar mutual admiration society. Probably told his mate Silly that he would get in touch with the ET for a damage limitation excercise.

I'd really like to know what Councillor Fitzgerald would class as a catastrophe. A journey across town started at 4.30pm that usually takes around 15 minutes took an hour and a half last night and I was furious. Every route I tried was completely clogged up with queing traffic trying to avoid the absolute CHAOS on the parkway system.

Councillor Fitzgerald is saying that the roadworks were carefully planned and carefully thought through but it seems to me the only planning was how to cause maximum chaos for the motorists of this city. Absolutely ridiculous!!!!

As the council heads headlong into its redevelopment of the station quarter and in doing so adds a number of pedestrian crossings to Bourges Boulavard (one suspects a hidden agenda to get motorists off the main north/south artery of the city and onto the parkways but I doubt they will admit to that) perhaps Cllr Fitzgerald would like to write an article now (this week) explaining how the parkways will cope with similar roadworks in the future. One of course assumes that he has remembered -
"Our improvement works are carefully planned and consideration is given to the impact they will have on drivers across the city. We don't just do it without thinking.".
Come on Cllr Fitzgerald put your 'seat' where your words are and publish the results of the modeling carried out to assess what the likely outcomes to traffic are of the council plans for the Station quarter with particular reference at the time of road works on the parkways.

Cllr Fitzgerald - Put up or shut up.

I eargerly await your article.

Er - we vote for and fund the council - we are their bosses in effect and we're telling them they got it wrong. So Mr Fitzgerald, it appears that you're not listening to the electorate - there IS a problem with the roadworks and the way they have (not) been planned - so do something about it.

Who is this 'Councillor Fitzgerald' who seems to have taken over our City? He has given our parking spaces to the over-abundance of taxis, is pushing forward charges for disabled people amongst other things and now is trying to tell us we are all imagining things and there is really no problem with traffic jams on our roads. By the way Councillor are you and all other Council employees going to pay for your parking in the near future or will you all stay exempt?
We need strong leadership but not dictatorship - Where are the other members of the Council or is the 'Fitzgerald' person the Leader now!

In a lot of cities these would be normal traffic levels.
This is a glimpse into the Peterborough’s future road system if nothing is done.

HOWEVER having said all that you can’t deny that it’s be incompetence on a grand scale.
