PETERBOROUGH'S MP pressed home the need for earlier services from the city to Stansted Airport during a meeting with a Network Rail manager.
Stewart Jackson said he discussed a range of issues with Colette Fowler, public affairs manager of Network Rail North East, Yorkshire and Humber.

Late night fast Saturday services from London to Peterborough was one of them.

The other was the lack of an early morning service from the city to Stansted airport, the nearest airport to Peterborough.

Speaking after the meeting, Mr Jackson said: "We had a productive discussion and I certainly gave Colette plenty of issues to go away with.

"One of the most pertinent sections of our discussion was surrounding early morning services to Stansted Airport. It is a travesty that the first service from Peterborough to Stansted arrives at only 08.49. You can get to Stansted from Cambridge as early as 05.13.

"The train operator, Arriva Cross Country, needs to wake up and realise it is not only providing a sub-standard service for my constituents, but also exacerbating the problems on the A14 by forcing people into their cars."

It's great that there are late trains from London to Peterborough at all - but we definately need faster trains from London at night - especially on a Saturday night, which, ironically, is the worst night of the week in regards to late night trains from Kings Cross to Peterborough. How about cheaper off-peak tickets too?

I also know from my days of living in Lincolnshire, a Sunday service and night weekend service between Peterborough and Spalding would be useful - and would be of economic benefit to the city.

It would be good to see an earlier service to Stansted. There are plenty of earlier services to Stansted from Liverpool St/Tottenham Hale and Cambridge first thing in the morning. It only adds to the point of increased traffic on the A14 and would be more environmentally friendly. It annoys me that with the majority of morning flights I take from stansted i have to drive too where as colleagues can get plenty of earleir services.

The big problem for Peterborough is that the Stansted services all start back at Birmingham, making it quite late before the first trains get here.

What we need is a dedicated service that starts at Peterborough to serve the airport to compliment the existing Cross-Country service.

If the planned expansion of Stansted goes ahead, I would hope that the line from Peterborough eastwards is electrified and a really good, high-capacity service is introduced that runs 24/7. I'm sure that this could be funded by the profits that BAA and the airlines would make, as I shudder to think what the A14 would be like otherwise...

When does the first train leave Stansted for Birmingham? 5:30am ish. Why not have a service start instead at Peterborough to Stansted prior to 7am. It doesn't have to start at Birmingham at some ungodly hour. There will be sets parked around Stansted waiting for 7/8/9 am services out. Why not leave 1/2 at Pboro and start the daily services from there?
