EAGLE BITTER UNITED COUNTIES LEAGUE Division One
SILEBY 1 NORTHERN STAR 3

TABLE-TOPPING Star midfield man Chris Garwell must love the sight of Sileby.

He netted when the Northampton team were beaten at Chestnut Avenue earlier in the campaign and helped himself to a brace as t
he city outfit completed a double on Saturday.

Karl Gibbs gave Star the edge with his eighth goal of the season before Garwell took centre stage, restoring their advantage just after the half-hour and sealing the points with a 25-yard belter in the second period.

"We needed a win in the league and we got it against capable opposition who will finish in the top six," said boss Tommy Cooper.

"It wasn't the greatest day for football, but it was a surprisingly good game."

Star: Lubniewski, Bogusz, Horne, Hill, Patten, Morris, Garwell (Nyang), Blewitt, Gibbs (Quinney), Paul (Edge), Fortune.

AFC KEMPSTON 0 HUNTINGDON 0

NEW manager Martin Ray led Huntingdon off the bottom of the table.

Town picked up their second point of the season in this hard-fought goalless draw - but it could have been so much more.

Frontman Lee Bassett missed a great late chance to turn one point into three, but new boss Ray was still a happy man.

He said: "I'll gladly take a point and it is nice to be off the bottom. The job now is making sure we continue to progress. We could have nicked the win but that would have been harsh on Kempston."

Huntingdon: Mackney, G. Marheineke (Ling), Wareing, Booker, Owens, Chapman, Dawkes (Brighton), D. Ray, Nevill, Bassett, R. Marheineke (M. Ray).

DEEPING 1 LONG BUCKBY 1

RANGERS' winning run was brought to an end after six straight successes as honours ended even in this top-of-the-table clash.

Tuncay Korkmaz's men had to come from behind to grab a point, but the Deeping boss felt that on the balance of play, they deserved a victory.

Buckby hit the front early in the second period before Ryan Semple's ninth goal of the season restored parity after 66 minutes.

Ashley Stevens saw a second Deeping goal ruled out for offside and David Cobb also hit the bar for the hosts.

Korkmaz said: "I will take a point from such a big game, but we could and probably should have had all three.

"Had we been a bit more clinical with the opportunities we had, I feel sure we would have won the match."

Deeping: Bircham, Burton-Jones, Goode, M. Porter, Ellis, Cobb, Ellison, Baines, Semple, Stevenson (Weston), Bettinson. Unused: Duncliffe, Wods, B. Porter.
