NETHERTON 1 RACING 252 2
Peterborough Sunday Morning League Premier Division

RACING 252 made it a last day double after adding the Premier Division title yesterday to the Hereward Cup they won last month.

Scott Stainsby's side arrived at The Grange for this title decider needing just a draw but in the end they went out and won the match thanks to goals from Jamie Graham and Dan Grigas.

Stainsby, who has decided to step down as Racing manager, said: "It is a great day for the club as this is the first time Racing have won the Premier Division title and to land the cup as well is very satisfying.

"To win it on the final day is great and just goes to show what a decent fight Netherton have given us this season.

"And while it was not a spectacular game, I thought it was played in a good spirit with boths teams competing well. Hopefully this team will stay together now and go on to win many more things as we have some real quality."

Netherton, who were also chasing their first top flight championship trophy, had their bid hempered by the early loss of hot-shot Jon Harrison through injury and had to play most of the second half with only 10 men.

A scrappy first half of few chances yielded little in the way of excitement, but it was perhaps the home side who should have been going off at the interval with their noses in front.

Adam Scotcher had two decent efforts saved by Racing keeper Marcin Lubiwewski, while at the other end, Graham saw his goalbound shot blocked shortly before the end of the half.

The balance of the game changed 20 minutes after the restart however when, following a good spell of Racing pressure, Netherton's Duncan Roberts hauled down big threat Graham just inside the penalty box.

Roberts clearly felt the incident had taken place outside the area but referee Damon Pywell felt otherwise, waving the red card at the full-back before Graham dusted himself down to slam home the spot-kick.

A goal to the good, Racing began to exert more pressure through the middle and it was no real surprise when Grigas beat the offside trap then Netherton keeper Dave Beeny before finishing off his good work with a tap- in to double the lead.

Netherton responded immediately when Ben Daly set up substitute Tom Randall, but the goal still left them needing two goals in the last 10 minutes.

And despite mounting a late charge on the Racing goal, they never really looked like finding it.

Netherton manager Roland Dean said: "The sending off hurt us and I felt the incident happened outside the area but that's football. We played well without really creating any clear-cut chances and with the firepower they had they were always able to hurt us and in the end they did."
