FESTIVAL fans will have their spirits dampened after a ban preventing people bringing alcohol was announced for one of the year's most anticipated music events.
Organisers of Stamford's Riverside Festival have decided to stop revellers from taking booze on site to stamp out under-age drinking and rowdy behaviour.
They say police will confiscate alcohol from anyone who takes it on site, and people will hav
e their bags searched as they arrive.
The festival won't be completely alcohol free, however, as people will still be able to buy drinks from licensed bars at the July event.
But the news will sadden the thousands of people who turn up to Stamford Meadows for a day of live music.
Many are used to taking in a few bottles and a hamper of food so they can relax on the grass in the summer sun.
However, festival chairman Martin Smith believes the ban will benefit everyone, especially since there have been problems with under-age drinkers in recent years.
Mr Smith said: "We're appealing to our audience not to bring any alcoholic drink on to the site.
"If you do, it will be confiscated. Please be prepared to have your bag searched on the way in.
"This is part of an appropriate clampdown on under-age drinking.
"(We've had issues in the past, and anything we can do to curb underage drinking is a good thing."
Stamford police are also gearing up to introduce an alcohol exclusion zone, banning drinking in the town's streets and parks.
The 2008 Riverside Festival will feature more than 30 bands on three stages, on Saturday, July 5.
