A PUB is celebrating 400 years of providing drink, food and a place to sleep this month.
The Oak Inn, in Easton-on-the-Hill, near Stamford, is thought to have been built some time between 1595 and 1610 and, according to landlord Graham Molden, it was originally given to a battle-weary soldier returning from war.
Graham, landlord for five years and a chef at the pub for 10, believes now is as good a time as any to celebrate and he plans to throw open the inn’s doors for a big party at the end of this month.
He said: “We won’t be here in another 100 years, so we want as many people to come along for a big, happy event with live music.
“There will be discounts on drinks, a barbecue and we may get people to come along in fancy dress.”
The historic pub is something of a landmark in the village, with its stone front facing out onto Stamford Road.
Graham (58) and his wife Sonja (57) say during their time as landlords they have experienced some unusual occurrences and believe the premises to be haunted.
Sonja said: “You sense there are people around. Once we had a rugby player stay here, a big lad. He refused to stay in one room and asked to be moved.
“He said someone was on the end of his bed, pulling the covers and switching the TV on and off.”
But Graham and Sonja say it is fantastic to be part of the inn’s history and believe the mystique surrounding the place adds to its charm.
They party will be held on Friday, August 29, at 8pm.
