RESEMBLING the Hobbits' mythical Shire home, this is the first glimpse of New College Stamford's vision for a greener future.
As part of plans to create a £50 million eco-friendly complex, the college's main building would be hidden under a dome of grass.

Oval-shaped windows would be cut out of the turf to let light in, with the green theme underpinned by avenues of trees surrounding the building.

Meanwhile, people visiting the college for the first time would be wowed by the sight of a curved glass frontage, a circular walkway and a bold water feature.

In a design that would not look out of place on a Lord Of The Rings film set, the building would be powered by renewable energy sources, including wind and solar.

Unveiling the design, college principal Miles Dibsdall said: "We are working with international experts on the new build to use the best and latest technology to create a true green building, and we are also focused on being zero carbon."

The college hopes it can complete the project and open the new buildings by 2010 – providing it can secure funding from the Learning and Skills Council and gain planning permission.

Meanwhile, according to Mr Dibsdall, green principles are already being transferred to the classroom.

From July, an environmental sustainability officer will be employed to work with students and staff to drive forward new initiatives and raise awareness of green issues.

And by September, there will be a green learner policy for new students to sign, where they pledge a commitment to be environmentally friendly.

Policies are also being drawn up to encourage the use of public transport, walking, cycling and car sharing.

Opened in 1967, New College Stamford, in Drift Road, provides full-time and part-time academic and vocational courses.

In the past decade, the number of students at the college has doubled, meaning there are now 2,500 14 to 18-year-olds and 1,500 adult learners.
