Zabik badly hurt in Polish Final

IT'S been a year to forget so far for Polish ace Karol Zabik.

IT'S been a year to forget so far for Polish ace Karol Zabik. The former world Under 21 champion, who began the season with Panthers before quitting the Elite League, was knocked unconscious during the Polish Final in Torun on Saturday.

He was taken to hospital with a suspected fractured skull after tangling with Damian Balinski.

Torun Hospital yesterday issued a statement saying that Zabik had broken no bones - other than his head injury - and has been sedated to ensure he relaxes and rests.

He is conscious and is fully able to talk to medical staff and family.

Zabik had scored two points up to that point in a meeting won by Tomasz Gollob for the eighth time. Two other former Panthers were in action, Piotr Protasiewicz finishing eighth on nine points and Piotr Swiderski scoring four points.

Zabik missed the beginning of the Elite League season as his mother was seriously ill.

His return to the side coincided with some impressive Panthers displays but he then stunned the club by announcing he was quitting because he didn't want to spend too much time away from his mother.

Zabik only returned to Alwalton in mid-season last year having quit claiming a lack of communication during the title-winning 2006 campaign and he then went through a crazy 24 hours when he was bombed out by the Alwalton management only to be reinstated the next day and signed up for this season.

But while he could hardly be called reliable off-track, there was nothing wrong with his performances on the shale and he would have been a useful man to have around as Panthers bid to reach the Elite League play-offs this season.
