Speedway: World champion Jason Crump is on his way back to Panthers - for the first night of the new season.Crump joins fellow top star Nicki Pedersen in the International Select that provides the opposition for the club's curtain-raising 40th Anniversary Challenge on Monday, March 15.

Crump made his British debut in Panthers colours as a raw 16 year-old back in 1992. Now, 34, he has confirmed he will be fit enough to grace the Alwalton track once again next month after a winter spent recuperating from serious burns to his arms.

The three-times world number one returned to his Northamptonshire home at the weekend after recuperating in his native Australia. He scored a total of 1,882 points during four seasons as a Peterborough rider.

Crump said: "I said I'd definitely be at Peterborough for the first meeting if I could weeks and weeks ago.

"At the time I wasn't sure if I'd be fit enough to start the season with everyone else and we agreed to keep it quiet rather than be seen to pull out. But I saw a couple of specialists in Australia and over the last few week things have gone really well.

"I had some terrific times at Peterborough and won't ever forget that very first season when I was only 16 and we won practically everything."

Crump and Pedersen will be joined by young Czech Matej Kus and Lasse Bjerre, the kid brother of Panthers' star Kenneth, in the away team on opening night.

Panthers' director of speedway Peter Oakes said: "In Jason and Nicki we undoubtedly have the world's two best riders on show – it's a mouth-watering way to start our anniversary season."

Crump will also ride in the Speedway Riders' Benevolent Fund charity meeting at Rye House the previous afternoon along with Panthers man Niels Kristian Iversen.
