POSH winger Chris Whelpdale is facing a struggle to be fit for the start of the Championship season.Whelpdale has been booked in for a hernia operation after labouring through the first day of pre-season training on Wednesday.
He will have the operation immediately, but with a minimum four-week recuperation period which will include most of the club's pre-season fixtures, the 22 year-old is not expected to be match fit in time to face Derby County in the opening Championship fixture on August 8.
Posh manager Darren Ferguson said: "We knew Chris had a problem at the end of last season, but we were told rest would cure it.
"That's not the case so he will now struggle to be ready for the opening game. It's a big shame for the lad, but we have options on the right side including Sergio Torres, George Boyd and Tommy Rowe."
Posh were hoping to persuade left-back Craig Braham-Barrett to cancel his contract by mutual consent today. League Two side Barnet have shown interest in a player signed on a free transfer from Welling last season.
