Weatherall penalty save was crucial for Powerleague

UNDER 12

UNDER 12IT WAS a tale of two penalties as Powerleague clinched a 4-3 win against Netherton Vultures to stay in the hunt of the Division One title.

After storming into a 4-1 lead with goals from Lewis Crawford, Josh Moore, Ben Horrocks and Dane Hammond, Powerleague had looked well on course for another comfortable win.

But with the wind blowing into their faces after the break, Powerleague then struggled to contain the Vultures who got right back into the game with goals for Daniel Powell, Zakarea Belhazy and Ash Abdurahman.

And had it not been for the dexterity of Powerleague keeper Ben Weatherall, the Vultures could have snatched a draw from the penalty spot.

It was not to be, however, and Weatherall turned the ball round the post to protect his side's lead before watching on as Joe Moore missed one for Powerleague at the other end.

Manager Robert Papworth said: "It was a good save from Ben but we should have really tied the game up far earlier than we did.

"The conditions were difficultthough and at least we could afford to have a laugh as 'Mooresy' missed one up the other end as we still got the win.

"We are now in a great position to win the league as we have games in hand on our nearest rivals.

"We play Spalding this weekend and if we can win that one I will start to feel very confident of our chances."

PETERBOROUGH Boys shrugged off the disappointment of falling short in the Division Three title race by beating Glinton 4-0 in their last game of the season.

Two for Chase Riley and one apiece for Aaron Quinn and Joshua Palmer saw Kenny Venters' side finish their campaign on a high by securing third place in the table.

But had it could have been even better for the Boys had they been able to hold what they had in their crunch game with league leaders Langtoft last weekend.

Venters said: "We were 2-1 up against Langtoft with five minutes to go and we let ourselves get caught out and ended up losing 3-2 which is a gutter as we still had an outside chance of the title.

"But more importantly it could well have earned us promotion. We will have to see now how many teams get promoted. It would be a real shame if we don't go up because this group of players are more than good enough to step up a level. But whatever happens I am proud of the lads' efforts."
