Warmer weather sees angling moving up a gear with three-figure nets

SPORT certainly moved up a gear with the onset of much warmer, even summer-like, conditions.

SPORT certainly moved up a gear with the onset of much warmer, even summer-like, conditions.Carp were on the feed at just about all of our local waters with quite a few anglers bagging three-figure nets. There were some cracking carp taken from both Kingsland and Eldernell off the surface, several going into double figures.

Railway Lakes at Whittlesey also fished well. This could be the fishery to try any time now for some big fish action on the deeper pool with carp to 30lb on the cards.

I also had good reports from Northey Park Fishery and Weston Lake at Peakirk continues to pack them in, a sure sign the water is in good form.

Biggin Lake at Oundle is yet another water well worth a visit. I should point out that you are no longer allowed to fish floating baits of any sort here now – you will be banned from the fishery if you try it.

THORPE Basin is always a very popular venue at this time of year. Some good nets of skimmers and bream have been taken along with plenty of roach weights.

With a good head of fish in the basin predators are never far away and they run to a very good size. Nine year-old Callum Sigourney can vouch for that after taking a massive 20lb-plus fish, for him and indeed for many anglers that's a fish of a lifetime.

AT this time of year Decoy Lakes is the hub of the action with quite a few of our local clubs heading off to this productive and very popular fishery just outside Whittlesey.

In the open matches once again it was John Whincup (right) who set the pace for the weekend, winning both the Saturday and Sunday opens.

Not just off one lake either – Saturday's match was fished on the new 'Strips' while Sunday's event saw him win off a very average peg on the Beastie Pool.

Decoy Lakes

Beastie Lake, Tues

1 F. Pizzimenti, Cats & Dogs, 98lb 12oz; 2 S. Smart, Ringer Baits, 94lb 8oz; 3 R.THE JVAC matches continue to attract a very good starting line-up and last weekend was no exception with just about every peg used on the prolific Willow Pool at Decoy.

The first three anglers all put 100lb-plus nets of fish to the scales topped by Dale Stones with 116lb 8oz.

Stones drew fancied peg one and made no mistake bagging carp to 5lb all day fishing long pole and pellet with a few better samples taken on sweetcorn in the margins.

Steve Freeman made sure he didn't have it all his own way, pushing him close with 106lb 6oz followed by Robert Bell on 102lb 5 oz and Danny Carlton rounding off the frame with a level 94lb.

IT was a good weekend for the Wades Match Group anglers.

Captain Dale Stones won on Sunday and squad man Mick King rounded off the bank holiday weekend with a match win on Monday from the Horseshoe Pool with 92lb.

In second place was Andy Gausden on 84lb followed by Chris Baldwin with 80lb 12oz.

OVER the past few years more and more river anglers have turned to local lakes and stillwaters through March, April and May.

One or two hold out but even the most ardent river men are coming around. The Oundle lads have seen the light and at the weekend had their first outing on a commercial water.

Yoke Hill was the venue which saw Damon Cunnington out in front with 30lb 3oz, seven carp taken on meat fished close in.

In second place was Mal Cunnington who had a level 15lb followed by Roger Lee with a net of roach and rudd boosted with a tench for 8lb.
