Warm weather boosts angling

THE warm weather over the past week or so has seen a lot of anglers getting their gear out for the first time this year.

THE warm weather over the past week or so has seen a lot of anglers getting their gear out for the first time this year. That's great news and with the fishing so good at most of our local waters I am sure they have enjoyed the cracking action on offer.

Unfortunately the sunny weather has also seen a few silly youngsters fishing the river out of season and perhaps more importantly taking a dip in the river to cool off.

I did not spot anyone personally at Orton locks but I have had a couple of reliable reports. The water is still very cold and if you are daft enough to jump off the lock railing the water temperature will I am sure take your breath away. Don't do it.

It is not just me giving out the warnings either. "Think carefully before cooling off in rivers and lakes" is the message from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents as the UK enjoys its first hot spell of the year.

In previous years, an increase in the number of accidental drownings has been seen during periods of warm weather.

To prevent similar tragedies this year, the advice is for people to consider the risks before plunging into the water.

Peter Cornall, head of leisure safety at RSPA, said: "This is the first spell of really warm weather that we have had this year and people are rightly wanting to make the most of it by getting out and about.

"Experience from previous years has shown that we sadly see an increase in accidental drownings at times like this, and we have already heard of the drowning of a 12 year-old boy this week.

"Our advice is that it is best to swim at properly supervised sites, such as beaches, lidos or swimming pools, but we understand that not everywhere has a lifeguard, particularly inland water sites.

"Think honestly about your swimming ability and remember that alcohol and swimming do not mix."

JVAC had a two-day festival last weekend. The first match was on Boddington Reservoir, which on past form had not been fishing that well.

However Steve Freeman made a mockery of the formbook, bagging an excellent 202lb of carp all taken on a pellet waggler from the productive 90's.

Lee Kendal came second with 160lb again the pellet waggler doing the damage with Barry Webb taking third place on 134lb.

Day two at Crockwell Farm saw Kendal round off a cracking weekend's action with a match win which also gave him the top spot in the two-day event.

Kendal fished caster and worm on the pole to finish on a level 83lb. Martin Howard picked up second place with 78lb 4oz followed by Tom Parker on 74lb.

Two day result: 1 L. Kendal 3pts; 2 M. Freeman 7; 3 M. Howard 8.

LEE Kendal also picked up a match win on the Four Island Pool at Decoy recently, putting 101lb to the scales.

Second place went to Pete Molesworth on 100lb followed by Carl Stones with 70lb.

KINGSLAND Reservoir was the venue for a two-match series for the Balfour Beatty AC lads.

On day one it was Jim Buckland who set the pace, taking a 25lb net of carp from the big carp lake.

Neal Parker came second with 20lb followed by Jason Vernaiis on 15lb. Vernaiis improved on that with a match win on day two, bagging a fine 50lb 6oz all taken on meat pellet fished over a bed of garlic hemp.

Ian Vallance took second place with a level 40lb followed by Parker on 10lb 2oz.

The club are relatively new to match fishing but would love a challenge match against any other local clubs in the area.

If you fancy it give the club secretary a call on 07515 553563.

TUESDAY'S open match on the Beastie Lake at Decoy saw Martin Freeman well ahead of the field putting 114lb 12oz to the scales, all carp taken up in the water from peg 14.

Saturday's match on the 'New Strips' produced a close finish with the consistent Tony Dawson taking the top spot with 91lb 12oz and he did it again in Sunday's open back on the Beastie Pool, although he had to share first place with Rob Edmundson.

WITH just one match to go in the Allsorts Spring Series, Dave Arbon heads the leaderboard.

But with the chasing pack closing in he will have to be on the ball to fend them off.

Lee Covell came storming back into contention in the latest match fished on the Beastie Lake at Decoy, coming top with a mixed bag weighing 76lb 8oz. Paul Dotchin came second on 62lb 2oz with Mick Linnell third with 58lb 8oz.

League to date: 1 D. Arbon 13pts; 2 P. Dotchin 15; 3 L. Covell/P Molesworth.

ROGER Gowler continued his fine run of form, taking top spot in the Ramsey AS club match on the Horseshoe Pool at Decoy at the weekend.

Fishing the pole close in on pellet he took carp to 5lb to weigh in 91lb 12oz.

Second place went to Terry Mott with 76lb 8oz followed by Andrew Rayment with 64lb 8oz.

A date for your dairy – on Sunday, Sawtry AS will be holding the Tom Breidon Cup match on their club water, Greenfields Lake, Sawtry.
