SOME of the biggest names in the eventing world converged on Wittering to battle it out for a 5,000 prize fund. The first Lincoln JumpCross Eventer's Challenge at Grange Farm Equestrian Centre proved to be a roaring success on Tuesday, 23 June.

Twenty-nine riders took part in an event which is the brainchild of Robin Dunlop and which claims to combine the excitement of cross-country riding with the accuracy of showjumping.

Angus Smales rode the aptly-named 10 year-old It's A Jackpot to glory and a 2,5000 pay-day after two rounds of competition.

The Leciestershire-based rider, who recently set up his own yard, said: "The money will be put to very good use."

"JumpCross is a new sport to me but I will certainly be coming back. It is great fun and really tests both the horses and the riders.

"The competition was very tough with Olympic medallists, Badminton and Kentucky winners all taking part, so it was just great to get the win."

Smales pipped Australian equestrian champion Clayton Fredericks (aboard Mr Miller) to top spot with Irish rider Mark Kyle, who led after the first round, back in third on Step In Time.

JumpCross has boomed since first being unveiled by Dunlop back in 2001. There are now 20 sites in the UK offering the sport as well as three on the continent.

Riders complete two rounds with their scores being made up of the time taken to complete the course with any penalties or bonuses added or subtracted.
