Triathlon: Galpin in Dam good nick for the Ironman

PETE Galpin received a confidence booster ahead of his Ironman debut when he led the local challenge at the Dambuster Triathlon Olympic distance event at Rutland Water.

PETE Galpin received a confidence booster ahead of his Ironman debut when he led the local challenge at the Dambuster Triathlon Olympic distance event at Rutland Water.Galpin, who made his debut over the distance (1500m swim, 40k bike, 10k run) in this event two years ago when finishing 25th, crossed the line in eighth place and was a minute quicker this time despite the windy conditions.

It was just what he needed in his final race before stepping up to the Ironman in Austria on July 5.

He said: "It would have been nice to go quicker in the swim but it was quite windy.

"After all the training I've been doing for the Ironman it felt like a sprint. I feel very fit and ready for Austria but I'm both nervous and excited.

"At least in Austria if the swim doesn't go too well I'll have plenty of miles ahead of me to make up for it!

"It will be my first Ironman so I won't go too crazy.

"I just want to break 10 hours and anything inside of that will be a bonus."

Galpin, who suffered a puncture and failed to finish last year's Dambuster, came up against PACTRAC clubmate and former European silver medallist Simon Hoppe at Rutland Water and it was the first time they have clashed in a triathlon before.

Galpin was three minutes quicker in the swim than two years ago but still found himself two-and-a-half minutes down on Hoppe.

It was not until a third of the way into the 10k run that Galpin caught his clubmate.

The race was part of the PACTRAC club championships and Dan Avondoglio currently leads.

The series is based on the Oundle Middle-Distance Race, Dambuster and each member's best two PACTRAC Mini-Series - and the best three of those four scores counts.
