MIKE Wenn won the PACTRAC Novice Triathlon, the second race of the club's Mini-Series, by 28 seconds. The event, open to people who have been in the sport for less than a year, saw 17 of the 30 competitors making their triathlon debuts while eight of the other 13 improved their personal bests.
Wenn (right) had completed the Mini-Series opener in 57.30 a week earlier but improved his time for the 400 yards swim by 11 seconds, took 44 seconds off his 10-mile bike best and ran exactly the same time as last week for the 3.5-mile run (23.40).
He was second out of the pool behind Debbie Fraser and then hit the front on the bike only to be caught by Steve Coward and Ali Dickson.
Dickson produced the fastest bike stage to leave him just two seconds behind Coward going into the run, but the latter began to edge further ahead with Wenn chasing them both.
Wenn took the lead during the second half of the final discipline and pulled clear, although the fastest run time was shared by two members of Peterborough Athletic Club - Peter Davies and Sarah Caskey.
Caroline Coulter won the women's race by more than a minute from Fraser. The third race of the Mini-Series take place tonight, starting at Oundle Pool at 7.30pm.
PETE Galpin of PACTRAC was the outright winner of the Swashbuckler New Forest Middle-Distance Triathlon.
Galpin, preparing for his Ironman debut in Austria next month, has previously won the PACTRAC Mini Series but this was his first triathlon success against competitors from other clubs.
He took the lead on the bike stage and produced the fastest bike and run splits of the race to come home with two-and-a-half minutes to spare. After winning over a 1.9k swim, 80k bike and 22k run, he said: "It was a good tester ahead of the Ironman on July 5.
"I was ninth coming out of the water and quickly moved up a couple of places during the bike stage. Because the course was open I could see other people ahead and I worked my way through the field.
"Then, about 30 miles into the bike stage, I went by a marshal who clearly wasn't ready and seemed surprised to see me so I knew I must be in the lead."
Galpin's wife Laura also did well, finishing 11th in the 30-35 women's age group as she tackled her longest race to date. She crossed the line an hour quicker than her target time.DAVE Wagstaff led a PACTRAC trio at the National Sprint Championships at Milton Keynes, held in cold and wet conditions.
