TRIATHLON: Vernon is an English champion and qualifies for World Championships in Mexico

Peterborough Triathlon Club (PACTRAC) member Paul Vernon is an English champion.

He won his age group (35-39) at the Grafham Water Standard Distance Triathlon, which also incorporated the English Championships, and in so doing qualified for the World Championships in Mexico in September.

Clubmate Simon Pauffley (50-54) also qualified after finishing third in his age group.

Vernon completed the one-mile swim, 25-mile bike ride and 6.25-mile run in 1:58:01 and was 13th overall.

In the Half-Ironman 70.3 in Majorca, PACRAC’s Paul Lunn made the podium once again.

He was competing in the big international race for the sixth time and grabbed a runners-up trophy to go with the first and third place trophies previously won in the event which involves a 1.2-mile swim in Alcudia Bay, a 56-mile bike ride into the mountains and a 13.1-mile run along the coast road and through the town.

Lunn finished the race, which was held in torrential rain, in 4:40:26 and was 48th overall.

Jim Fell of PACTRAC made it six age group wins (70-74 years) on the trot when taking the honours in the Stockton Duathlon. He was 199th in 2:37:51.

Despite suffering a fall on the run, Fell held on to win his age group by 16:53 minutes. and is now the English Duathlon Champion for his age group.

Unfortunately, the resulting injury means that he won’t now be competing in Spain next month in the World Duathlon Championships. George Prodrick will be there for PACTRAC, and another

local, Claire Steels, will also be in Spain.

Young PACTRAC member Jonathan Oakey came eighth overall and second in his age group at the Leicester Sprint Triathlon.

He did the 400m swim, 12.5-mile bike ride and three-mile run in 63:32.

The Monster Mojo (swim 1.2 miles, bike 51 miles, run 13.1 miles) and the Monster Mojito (swim 1 mile, bike 24 miles, run 6.25 miles) took place from the Peterborough

Rowing Lake, Thorpe Meadows, Peterborough, on Sunday.

PACTRAC had 12 competitors finish.

Wayne Stainsby came sixth overall in the Mojito, with Kim Bell coming ninth overall and first lady.

Abi Schofield was third lady overall, whilse Kate Armstrong also won her age group.
