Trebleon for PSV as Webb lobs winner

YAXLEY 0 PSV 1 (PFA Under 18 Cup final)

YAXLEY 0 PSV 1 (PFA Under 18 Cup final)PSV now look odds on for the treble after beating Yaxley to lift the PFA Cup at Chesnut Avenue yesterday afternoon.

A well-taken goal from Max Webb early in the second half proved to be the decisive moment for PSV, who can add the PFA Cup to the Division One title won at a canter two weeks ago.

Neil Cotton's side now face heavy underdogs Stamford in the final of the Youth League KO Cup on Wednesday bolstered by a dazzling double which Cotton hopes could yet become a terrific treble.

He said: "It was a tight game, no doubt as a lot of players on both sides konw each other. So it was always going to be a bit cagey.

"But I thought we got behind them more than they did us and we certainly created more chances over the course of the game. Of course Yaxley made it tough for us and our keeper had to be at his best a couple of times in the second half but overall we deserved the win.

"We have now won the double and while it would be great to make the treble we will have to wait and see - for now we are just savouring the moment."

But there would have been few spectators savouring a tight first half tussle where the ball spent most of the time being bounced from head to head in the middle of the park as both teams struggled to get into their stride.

The few chances that were created fell to PSV with both Jacob Wilson and Daniel Clements denied from range by excellent saves from Yaxley keeper Aaron Keir.

Despite their lack of openings, however, Yaxley could have nicked the lead just before the end of the first half had Corey Kingston hit the target when through but instead the young winger dragged his shot just wide and the half ended goalless.

Luckily for the 200 or so fans watching the game, the second half did get a lot better.

From the moment Webb sent an inch perfect lob over the advancing keeper, the action opened up with far more chances being created at both ends.

Pricked into action by the goal Yaxley came right back into it with Kingston going close before a nasty clash of heads between Josh Crick and Kieran Brennan delayed the game for five minutes and broke their flow.

After the restart Sam Makansi was twice denied by excellent saves from Lewis Taylor in the PSV goal to leave Yaxley boss Nigel Clarke with his own headache after a first taste of defeat in a final.

He said: "I am gutted as I thought we deserved a goal and the fact that their keeper got man-of -the-match says it all really. We created a lot but didn't test their keeper enough. "This is my first defeat in a final in 30 years as a manager but I cannot fault the boys effort, it just wasn't to be our day."
