Darren Ferguson's reign as Posh manager is over. Ferguson's position was the subject of intense media speculation yesterday (Monday) after reports of his dismissal emerged. The Evening Telegraph understands manager Ferguson has been involved in crunch talks with senior club officials during the past two days.

Tuesday, 12 noon: Assistant manager Kevin Russell took the Posh training session today.

All parties were tight-lipped when leaving London Road late yesterday afternoon, but director of football Barry Fry later confirmed the current position.

He stressed that Ferguson's departure was yet to be formalised but expected both parties to conclude negotiations on the matter today.

Fry said: "Nothing surprises me in football. I and the club would like to thank him for his miraculous achievements with the total support of the chairman in the near three years he has been at the club and we wish him and his family all the best in the future."

Ferguson could not be contacted by The Evening Telegraph. His assistant manager Kevin Russell's position was unclear last night.

Bookmakers have already opened markets on Ferguson's successor. Former England Under 21 chief Peter Taylor - a man sacked by League Two club Wycombe last month - was installed as a 4/1 joint favourite with Steve Coppell.

Rookie Oxford manager Chris Wilder, who has guided his team to the top of the Blue Square Premier Division, has been suggested as a candidate.
