Swimming: Sophie's sweet at the British Championships

CITY swimmer Sophie Sweet has been rubbing shoulders with the crème de la crème of British swimming this week.

CITY swimmer Sophie Sweet has been rubbing shoulders with the crme de la crme of British swimming this week. The 16 year-old City of Peterborough Swimming Club (COPS) member qualified for the 100m backstroke at the British Championships and claimed a creditable 28th place.

While the elite of Great Britain's swimming talent were preparing at Sheffield for the British Championships, Sweet was swimming in the finals of the Cambridgeshire ASA County Championships. She then made a mad dash up the A1 to Sheffield to prepare herself for the big event.

Shortly before Sweet began her race, Olympic medallists Rebecca Adlington and Jo Jackson fought out a fantastic 400m freestyle final with Jackson beating her more famous team-mate into second place with a new world record of 4min 0.66secs.

Ben Negus, Sweet's coach at COPS who used to coach Adlington, said: "Sophie's performance was very creditable. To be on poolside in Cambridge on Sunday night, competing for her county place and supporting our younger club swimmers, then, on Monday morning to be swimming in Sheffield against World record holders and Olympic champions shows just how special Sophie is."

Other elite swimming set-ups have approached Sweet to tempt her away from the Peterborough club but Negus is anxious to keep her at the Regional Pool.

COPS chairman Dave Cook added: "Sophie's continuing success at major championships is just reward for the effort that Ben and Sophie have put in on poolside. Sophie's achievements and her support for the younger swimmers in the club is invaluable in building a base for future success.

"As a club we are concerned that we are producing talented swimmers that will be scouted by the more established swimming set-ups and hope to be announcing shortly initatives that will make our top swimmers want to stay at the club and make Peterborough a part of the national swimming elite."
