Swimming: COPS defend Fenland title in superb style
CITY of Peterborough Swimming Club (COPS) have defended their Senior Fenland League title in emphatic style.
CITY of Peterborough Swimming Club (COPS) have defended their Senior Fenland League title in emphatic style.In the final round, which was held on home ground at the Regional Pool Peterborough, COPS' swimmers clocked up an amazing 26 first places, eight second places and four thirds in the 39 races held.
The final points tallies were: COPS 213, West Norfolk A 164, City of Cambridge 145, The Saxons 108, West Norfolk B 73.
The margin of COPS' victory showed just how much the club has progressed in the last few seasons. They clocked up 16 new personal best times at a time of the season when many swimmers have only just returned to full-time training from the summer lay-off.
Leading the way for COPS was 13 year-old Zara Bailey with wins in the 14 years 100m breaststroke and butterfly and the Open 100m breaststroke. Nicholas Ilsley (14) also clocked up three wins for COPS in the 100m individual medley, 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly.
Twelve year-old Sam Holmes took first place in the boys 50m butterfly and 100 individual medley and second place in the 50m freestyle.
Several swimmers took two wins out of two including Joshua Cassidy (10), Liam Knight (15), Joanne Longland (15), Sophie Sweet (16) and Charlie Walker (19) who set a new club record in the men's open 100m freestyle of 61.41seconds.
Other members of the winning squad were Ashley Binns (16), Hannah Brigham (12), Matt Brigham (13), Katie Brown (9), Emily Cooke (14), Antony Coombe (12), Chloe-Jade Coulson (12), Charlotte Harrison (14), Jenny Hookham (9), Mitchell Pears (12), Heather Pfeiffer (12), Hal Whyatt (10) and Ellen Williams (14).
Head coach Ben Negus said: "I was truly amazed that so many of our swimmers were up to the mark so early in the season. Their overall fitness has been improving and it showed tonight in the number of first and second places that we took.
"The recent World Championships showed that fitness and diet play a big part in producing winners.
"We are taking new strides this season to help our swimmers understand how to train smarter and live a healthy lifestyle. I hope that our efforts will be reflected at the end of the season in the major championships,but there is a long way to go yet."
n A REST did the swimmers of Deeping Swimming Club a power of good as they returned with a stack of trophies from the Nifty 50s Open meet at Thetford – their first competition since a summer break.
They collected 38 trophies across all age groups and there were also 21 new county qualifying times and 33 personal bests.
Dom Gray (15 and over) set a county age group time and dominated the events he entered which included four first places.
Andrew Nobe (10 yrs) secured two first places and three second places. Eleanor Templer (9 yrs) achieved four first places and a third place.
There were also other notable performances which included Charlotte Bamford (12 yrs) with two second places, Ben Wolf (11 yrs) with a second and a third, Bethany Neal (11 yrs) with a third and Zoe Fisher (11 yrs) achieved three thirds.
