Ben Stokes was a ‘hero of the week’ contender, but his wonderful 258 wasn’t quite as wonderful as Martin Samuelsen’s goal for Posh at Sheffield United.

Samuelsen’s golden moment won the game. Stokes was just part of a team that drew a match that lasted five days.

Despite Stokes’ heroics I fear for Test cricket after another match ruined by a pitch that was only ever going to produce a draw.

The five-day format is under serious threat by tracks that are either tailored to suit the home side or so flat it renders the action horribly boring. Stokes’ innings was a freak show that won’t happen again for a decade.

When results are so predictable, people will turn away and watch mercenaries play slog cricket instead.
