Super sextet star in city regatta

PETERBOROUGH City Rowing Club's young stars bossed the podium in a big double sculls race at Thorpe Meadows on Saturday.

PETERBOROUGH City Rowing Club's young stars bossed the podium in a big double sculls race at Thorpe Meadows on Saturday. As usual the club's annual junior championships attracted a huge entry of budding stars of the future from all over the country, but six home rowers proved unbeatable in the double sculls for 13 year-olds.

James Marshall and Matt Hart led the way to claim the gold medal over the 1,000m course in 4 mins 4 secs with clubmates Daniel Richardson and Dominic Manganiello finishing just seven seconds behind for silver.

And Josh Codd and Harry Veal-Gray completed a City clean sweep by finishing third in 4 mins 21 secs. The all-conquering performance of this set of youngsters helped City to second place in the Victor Ludorum behind winners Headington School from Oxford.

Marshall and Hart provided the only gold medal for the hosts, but they were also both in excellent form in the single sculls race for 13 year-olds.

Marshall, a Jack Hunt schoolboy who even at his tender age has a string of big wins to his name including a British national indoor title, finished second behind a top-class youngster from Nottingham. Hart was third, just five seconds behind his school and clubmate.

Veal-Gray finished just outside the medals as City again displayed their great strength in this particular age group. They also picked up a bronze from the quad of Manganiello, Chris De Freitas, Daniel Farday and Will Hayes, plus cox Holly McFarlane.

In total City collected eight medals from 20 finals in a regatta restricted to children aged 14 and under. Two talented girls picked up the remaining two bronze medals.

Meghan Lawless finished third in the single sculls for 14 year-olds, while Georgia Swain took bronze in the single sculls for 13 year-olds.

The double sculls for 12 year-olds was open to boys and girls and City pair Jemma Codd and Abigail Fletcher finished a creditable fourth in the final behind three boy pairings.

Oundle School picked up a silver in the girls 14 year-old quad race and a bronze in the boys equivalent.

The club hosted 91 races including the 20 finals and were delighted with the form of the home youngsters as well as with the day itself.

Club press officer Anita Carter said: "Last year we won one silver and one bronze so it was a massive improvement. Second place in the Victor Ludorum was a great effort as there are some strong clubs and schools taking part."

Bursary prizes of 250 awarded to the most impressive rowers on the day went to competitors from Nottingham and St Peter's School, York.Boys
